Soloing Pawns, A Guide

Pawns just go forward. Why can we go back?

Refer to the original manual for the original instructions.

Obtain the coordinates from the 8 pairs of pieces. In addition obtain the coordinates of the blockers in the original manual. Examine the left piece and determine if the right coordinate is reachable without obstruction within one move. DO NOT CLEAR THE COORDINATE IF THE LEFT PIECE IS ABLE TO CAPTURE. Other pieces and blockers can block the capture for the current piece.

When using the table, the first row is the piece determined on the left of the pair; The second row is the interpreted base condition for the pair; and the third row is the visualization of the pieces' possible captures. “|ΔX|” refers to the horizontal distance between the pieces (A2 -> G5, horizontal difference is 6) and “|Δ#|” refers to the vertical distance between the pieces (A2 -> G5, vertical difference is 3.) On the 7×7 grid for the relevant pieces, black tiles denote as if the piece was placed in that spot; red tiles denote immediate capture with the left piece; blue tiles require checking for obstructions before the targeted tile; and unfilled tiles denote the pawn cannot be captured there.
